CONTAINER SHIP MOL BRILLIANCE COLLIDED WITH COASTAL CONTAINER BARGE IN VIETNAM (20 Dec, 2016)



MOL Brilliance collision
The container ship MOL Brilliance collided with coastal container barge Cai Mep 28 on Cai Mep river in Phu My, Vietnam. The vessel was leading the port with pilot on board, but the barge crossed her course, neglecting the several calls from the container carrier. MOL Brilliance stuck the barge with her bulbous bow and caused sufficient damages to her. The barge ran aground to avoid sinking and remained partially afloat, with water ingress and breaches below the waterline. Fortunately there were no injured people and no water pollution during the accident, but the both vessel were detained for further investigation.

The container ship MOL Brilliance was ordered to anchor on Go Gia anchorage at Cai Mep river for special survey and inspection. The root cause of the accident are currently unknown, but according to preliminary information the responsible for the collision was coastal container barge, which was proceeding through the shipping way, but neglected the container carrier coming from the starboard.

The container ship MOL Brilliance (IMO: 9685334) has overall length of 337.00 m, moulded beam of 48.00 m and maximum draft of 14.50 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 112,000 DWT, the gross tonnage is 115,000 GRT and the maximum capacity is 10,000 TEU. The ship was built in 2011 by Jiangsu New Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China. MOL Brilliance is driven by main engine MAN B&W 10S90ME-C9.
